Church Renovation
Phase: Heating and Floor (July 2014 - February 2015)

St Mary's has a series of proposed projects to enhance the fabric of the building, both interior and exterior, and make it better to serve the needs ot this very active Parish. The refurbishment of the Rectory was completed in 2009, creating space which is used continually by various Parish groups. There then followed the joint development with the neighbouring St Thomas More School of the new space, named the St John Southworth room. The next phase was the much needed replacement of the old, costly and inefficient Church heating system. The current heating services were declared not fit for purpose in 2013 and, following much detailed technical evaluation involving Diocesan resources as well, a new underfloor heating system was chosen, including the installation of a new boiler.

This involved the taking up of the existing wood block flooring which was installed in the 1960s and provided us with the opportunity to address some other issues associated with that floor.

To allow for the maximum efficiency of the new heating, it was decided to replace the wooden block flooring with Purbeck stone (which already existed in the stone pavement in the Sanctuary). This was estimated to increase the effective output of the heating by c 20-25%. The use of this stone and the proposed design pattern echoeds the type of paving found in both mediaeval and nineteenth century church buildings and was designed to blend with the beautiful overall John Francis Bentley architecture

The redevelopment schedule extended to February 2015 but we were able to return to the Church at the start of Advent 2014 and hold our Christmas Services in our wonderful Church. The builders then returned in January 2015 to complete the work.
